Meals on Wheels Community Service – Northern Cape
Meals on Wheels is a Non-Profit Organization Providing Cooked Meals, to the poorest of the poor, vulnerable persons, children, and the elderly. Providing community support, infrastructures, and services to those in need.
What we do
MOWCS serves the basic needs of the poorest of the poor, the vulnerable, the disabled and the elderly and children in society. The “Cooked Meal” forms the basis of the basket of services that MOWCS renders to alleviate the basic needs of the poorest of the poor, the vulnerable, the disabled and the elderly and children in society. We are well aware that providing a meal to the poorest of the poor is the
first step in mobilising these individuals for their daily tasks.OUR MISSION
To identify the social, health, family life, and welfare needs of the community and to co-ordinate, through affiliates, meaningful care, utilizing available resources, motivated by supreme love for God and impartial love for our fellow men – to the ultimate glory of God.OUR CHALLENGES
We are still faced with imbalances of the past, most previously disadvantaged groups do not have access to formal infrastructure and facilities. Rectifying these imbalances are a priority for us.Meals on Wheels was established in East London in 1964
The purpose at that time was to provide meals to the elderly in the community.
The program has since then evolved into a National program targeting
the poorest of the poor and vulnerable person in South Africa. In September 2009 MOWCS received their new NPO registration certificate.
All six area offices also received their NPO registration certificates by
October 2009. The new National Director was appointed in July 2009.
Meals on Wheels affiliates range from well established, financially well supported to the truly poor. These affiliates render service from one day per week to five days per week
depending on the need of the community and the funding that is available. All the Areas, have Executive Directors as well as other competent staff who take care of the administration within the provinces under their jurisdiction. Each Area is registered with its own fund-raising authorization.
Within the territorial boundaries allocated to the Area, this functions as the coordinating body of affiliates, many of which are also registered with their own NPO status. Those, which are not registered, operate as projects of the Area.
The major concentration of affiliate activities are in the Eastern and Western Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng. The Areas and registered Affiliates and all of the Projects, submit their own reports to the Department of Social Development, and thus all the details of their activities are reported separately.
