What are USSD codes?
Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) is a technology that allows users to access various services, such as menu-type applications, for example, information requests, portal-type requests and banking applications, through the use of short codes. These short codes usually start with * and end with # and can be typed into any MTN cellphone to call up a specific action.
What does it cost to make use of a USSD code?
USSD sessions are charged from your airtime or billing balance and costs 20c for every 20 seconds you use the service. This may sound like a lot of money, but most actions on the USSD network will not take you longer than 20 seconds to complete. Some USSD services are free.
How do I use a USSD code?
- Dial the code of the USSD service you want to access, for example, *123#, and then press the call button.
- The application will respond with a menu, for example:
*123# Menu:
1. Phone Setup
2. MTN Play
3. MTN Services- To respond to the menu item or number of the information you want to receive, press ‘OK’ or ‘Reply’, enter the number of the menu item you want and press ‘OK’, ‘Reply’ or the green call button to receive the required information.
- You can then browse the menu until you find what you are looking for and respond with the corresponding number.
What USSD codes are there?
Here are some of the most important USSD codes for MTN customers:

That means you have to respond to a menu and make your choice within 30 seconds after pressing the call button or when pressing ‘OK’ or ‘Reply’.
- MTN Roaming customers will not always be able to use the USSD service as some GSM networks do not support USSD as a bearer. It is therefore advisable to check the country you intend visiting to see whether the MTN partner network operator supports USSD.
- USSD is network dependent, and services offered on the MTN network cannot be accessed by other network subscribers.

Nobody Answers the telephone when you call this is unexpectable
I don’t even want to rate them. I don’t know who to blame, but they can’t get my contract’s invoice amount right, but every month my debit order keep on subtracting the wrong amount, and it is costing me a lot of money. I am suppose to pay a certain amount, I’ve been to the branch several times and the amount is still not right. How difficult can it be..
NO assistance!!!!! POOR service!!! Close the branch!!!!!
Went in for a upgrade all documents were signed and they said that the fone would arrive within 2 – 3 working days. After the fone never arrived I contacted them again to enquire and they had no clue what upgrade i was refering to they couldnt even trace the phone. They just did not know anything about anything.
No star service!! Poor service. Staff dont know products and most of the time they cant help
Most pathetic cellphone outlet! Took a add-on sim contract with a tablet last week the 29th June 2015 already. No sim connection or contract activation up till today! All they keep on telling us is that headoffice is busy with the problem! ?!?! It’s the 5th of July today phoned the diamond pavillion mall’s mtn 35 times no answer! But wen you in the shop they busy consulting you they answer the phone but when you phone 0538327158 NO ANSWER!
This is terible terible service and so inconvenient ! Have the tablet but no connection or anything! How can they book the contract out but when you get home there is still till today no connection! Spoke to them many many times, went back in store 3times already…they keep on telling us the same nonsens!
Gona go cancel this cause an other cell outlet will be far more helpfull!
So angry and dissapointed in MTN!
Selfoon ingestuur om reggemaak te word.Na 7 dae is selfoon nogsteeds nie weggestuur.Swak diens, onaanvaarbaar.
Poorest service i have ever received in my life they dont know how to take care of customers.
after struggling with MTN call center to do an upgrade I drove from Hartswater to Kimberley to do the upgrade at the store in Kimberley, I was assured that everything is ok, after i was assisted only to find out that no sim swop was done when i got home, the call center told me to go back to the store as they cannot assist me, considering i was about to cancell my contracts until i gave them the benefit of the doubt.
On the 17/10/2013 I phoned the MTN oulet in Diamond Pavillion Mall and inquier about a Samsung phone to buy as advertised for R899.00 but once I got there they have problem about just selling a phone they advertise in the book, and they have stock but know there is a problem????. This is the last time I ever visit that shop or do bussiness with them. I bought the same phone from another oulet with no problem.
My experience with the service from MTN Diamond Pavillion is similar. Customer service is non existent. I bought a TV deal from them, only to be supplied with a TV that does not meet the specifications advertised. I’ve reported the issue to the on Wednesday the 19th of February 2014 and up to date (28 Feb 2014), still don’t have an answer.
Thanks for the info guys, I just changed my mind about buying a phone there Thanks a lot.
