Located in a transitional zone where by Karoo, grassland and Kalahari thornveld savannah meet, species diversity at Benfontein is a big attraction.
Location
About 10km south of Kimberley. Originally bought by De Beers in 1891 for its diamond reserves. Benfontein is today dedicated to the conservation of fauna and flora. The reserve is home to a number of conservation research projects.

Wildlife
The 11 000 hectare property is famous for its nocturnal animals including aardwolf, black-footed cat, Cape fox, caracal, aardvark and various species of nocturnal birds and rodents. Benfontein, which encompasses a large open pan, also supports herds of springbok, ostrich, red hartebeest, black wildebeest and gemsbok. The reserve is renowned for its pure population of black wildebeest. Leading research, worldwide, into the aardwolf is happening on Benfontein.
Birdlife
Benfontein is classified as an important bird area. Twelve different larks and five species of pipit are amongst the 260 bird species recorded here. There are over 40 Sociable Weaver colonies in camel thorn trees. White-backed Vultures and numerous raptors also breed on the farm, along with Tawny Eagles, Secretary birds, Greater Kestrels and Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls. Recently, the reserve has played host to two groups of Lesser Flamingos.
