When was your lasts visit there? We are hoping to stay there is February next year. Would you recommend it. We’ve stayed there quite often in the past but not in the last six years.
This place has seemingly shut down or has been entirely abandoned. A shame considering its close proximity to the ONLY real tourist attraction in Kimberley.
GEEN INSTANDHOUDING WORD GEDOEN NIE, GEEN SEKURITEIT IN SIG NIE. GEEN WARM WARM WATER NIE. SWAKSTE KARAVAANPARK WAT ONS BESOEK HET. SAL GLADNIE WEER SOONTOE GAAN NIE.
Our visit and stay at the Big Hole Caravan Park in Kimberley on 18 – 19 December 2013 was a disappointment.
1. NO SECURITY or entrance control is provided during the day or night. The lady who booked us in left at 16:00 and told us that a security guard would be available from 18:00. We specifically checked during the course of the night as well, and could not find a security guard anywhere. The dilapidated state of the security office / cubicle at the entrance gate suggests that no regular security is provided. In fact, we had to get rid of a vagrant when we arrived back at our tents. This is obviously a big risk for tourists who stay in the caravan park! Due to the lack of security, we could not visit a restaurant as planned, so Kimberley is losing out on potential tourism income.
2. This is the first ever caravan / camp site where I HAD TO PAY FOR TWO STANDS while pitching two small one-man tents ON A SINGLE STAND – a ridiculous amount of money paid for poor facilities and NO security; we paid far less per night at a well equipped, secure 4-star caravan / camp site a few nights later. To apply a decision / rule to charge per tent indiscriminately does not make sense unless the intention is to use the proximity of the camp to the Big Hole to rip off tourists.
3. The ablution facilities were not clean and some of the facilities and taps were out of order. It seems that the facilities are not regularly maintained.
4. The lawn was not maintained and there was a serious problem with ants.
Given the historic importance of the town of Kimberly and the caravan park’s proximity to the Big Hole, it is a shame that it is not better managed and maintained. I hope this feedback will help to improve conditions at the Big Hole Caravan Park in Kimberley.
Ps: The facilities offered were not as portrayed on the internet, so management should consider communicating changes to facilities to websites who advertise on their behalf – see the following (e.g. swimming pool advertised, but the site has no swimming pool):

I arrived at the caravan park on the 19 December 2013 and the following bothered me:
No security at the gate…..I didn’t feel like parking my caravan there to while in a restaurant.
The grass was not cut and some of the braai’s were broken.
The overall neatness of the caravan park disappointed me.
We (2 families) decided not to stay at the caravan park and went to the Horseshoe Motel and overnight there.
Hope my comment and recommendations will help to improve the overall situation. Just some useless info….Kimberley is my hometown and I will do anything to treasure old memories.
