  • Dronfield offers attractive accommodation for families and friends overnighting in the Kimberley area or an ideal weekend getaway from the stress of city life. It is a birder’s paradise.
    Location
About 10km outside Kimberley on the N12. The reserve has belonged to De Beers since 1888, but it was only proclaimed a nature reserve in 2004.
    Size
    12 000 hectares
    Habitat
    Kimberley thornveld
    Birdlife
Dronfield is home to a breeding colony of White-backed Vultures, which has been extensively researched for over 20 years. A vulture restaurant has been established on the reserve to enable visitors to watch these large birds at close range.
The reserve is classified as an important bird area. To date about 140 bird species have been identified on Dronfield. It is also situated close to Kamfers Dam, home to about 50 000 Lesser Flamingos. These birds, along the Greater Flamingos, are breeding on an artificial island in the dam created for this purpose – one of only six regular breeding sites for this species in the world.
    Wildlife
The reserve is stocked with herds of eland, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, zebra and kudu, along with springbok, impala, duiker and steenbok. Roan and sable antelope populations have been reintroduced of buffalo is in the pipeline.

6 self-catering luxury, air-conditioned chalets. Each with en-suite bathrooms. Conference facilities and swimming pool available.
